ME and MY Chennai- BlaaZe- The Rhythmic Poet

I was born in Chennai in 1975. My dad was an architect, and we were consistently on the move owing to his profession. We moved to Africa when I was 4 years old, what kept me connected to Chennai was coming here during vacation every year. The VGP golden beach used to be the go-to place those days and I used to have a lot of fun and leave with fond memories every year. I was so fascinated by the film industry back here that I used to visit shooting spots that were more like a dream. I have fond memories of meeting actor Nagesh in his home, starting to dance like his son, and eventually, we became very close friends.

One of my early memories of getting the taste of Tamil Hip-hop was when I was a little kid watching VHS video cassettes of Tamil movies in Zambia, there was one man who is not a conventional hero but every time he spoke with so much poetry and rhyme, every sentence, the man was T. Rajendar, he for me is a legend who made Tamil film dialogues sound so rhyming and cool.  Cut to 2002 it was AR Rahman who introduced me to the Tamil Film industry to sing a RAP portion for none other than Super Star Rajnikanth for the film BABA. From there Rapping which I was doing for fun became life since then there was no looking back, from Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan to Vikram I have written and sang RAP portions for leading artists in the industry.

My most unforgettable experience on stage in Chennai was the first time I shared the stage with AR Rahman along with legendary singers like SPB, it’s for the “Unity of Light” concert directed by Manirathnam, it was a dream come true for me as I always believed that my place in this universe is on a stage with a mike. I was there on stage for one and half minutes singing the BABA rap with ARR smiling at me and that clip was the last one my dad saw before he passed away making it even more memorable.  When I came into this city, I had no exposure to the depth of our literature like Thirukkural, being here did help me dig deeper into my roots, the city, its classical arts, and literature have indeed opened up interesting dimensions to my art.

I am happy that the Hip-Hop scene is growing amazingly in Chennai, from dance as an expression of the art in the early days to beatboxing to know the way Tamil Rap is growing is so heartening to witness, a lot of youngsters with some amazing lyrical skills like Bmac, Arivu to name a few are taking it to the next level. One thing I feel chance-villa about Chennai is our people, its more than anything that the city has got, when you go down to the street corner shop to have a cup of tea or to buy vegetables the warmth you get when you interact with people is something unique to Chennai, no matter where you go you want to come back to see those smiling faces.

Wrapping up my story with a RAP for the city I love the most!

The reader, the listener

To every fan/

You make this city what it is

and for that, I say, "Thanks"/

With every song,

ever ready to represent/

The city of dreams

that has it all in a sense/

You can pray all-day

And party all night/

The temples and the clubs

Both ready to delight/

The idlis and dosa's

that can never be beat/

Except by vethekozhumbu,

My all-time favorite treat/

A mix of the old

along with the new/

That's how I remember

and forever cherish you/

My Chennai!!
